Sinkhole and Pothole Patching

What is the difference between a sinkhole and a pothole?
A sinkhole is a hole in the ground that occurs when the surface layer of the ground collapses along with anything that was on the surface. A pothole is also a hole in the ground, however, it is generally smaller than a sinkhole. It occurs when the surface of the pavement is chipped or pieces of the pavement are removed.
What causes sinkholes or potholes?
Sinkholes can have various causes. Sometimes, these causes are man-made, and other times, they are not. Man-made causes of a sinkhole can be when city advancements weaken the structure of the ground below. These advancements, whether it is the construction of a road or a skyscraper, can result in the accumulation of water in the ground, weakening the surface, thus, causing it to sink. Other times, nature itself may cause sinkholes. Potholes, on the other hand may also be caused by something above the ground, such as the continuous passing of traffic, which may break or chip away at pavement. In order for this to happen, the soil below pavement is weakened by water, which is why potholes become more likely to occur in the winter months, when there is lots of snow and thaw.
